Jupyter4NFDI is a project to create a basic NFDI (https://base4nfdi.de/, https://www.nfdi.de/) service that enables the use of the many existing JupyterHubs at partner institutions and beyond via a central hub, thus facilitating access to Jupyter technology and available computing resources, including HPC. In addition, a variety of software environments and notebook-based tools can be made available through this infrastructure and used particularly easily, as users do not have to deal with installation or maintenance.

Project Goals

The project goals include simplifying access to JupyterHubs and resources (including HPC), using the NFDI-AAI provided by IAM4NFDI to regulate access to the central service and external resources, extending the reach of Jupyter to a wider audience within the NFDI and beyond by improving and facilitating access to computer-based, reproducible research.

GWDG’s Role in the project

The GWDG is involved in the project in several ways. It is responsible for connecting to the NFDI’s AAI infrastructure, which is done in close coordination with the IAM4NFDI project, another Base4NFDI project with GWDG participation. It integrates its own JupyterHubs (Jupyter Cloud and SCC JupyterHub) into the Jupyter4NFDI infrastructure and thus provides computing resources. Last but not least, under the umbrella of the NFDI consortium Text+, the GWDG develops notebook-based applications for the processing of humanities data and provides these and the associated software environments.
